The aged priest Zacharias stands alone in the holy place, burning incense, when the angel appears beside the altar. Tissot fills the upper air with smoke and light, so the messenger seems to grow out of the incense itself. Zacharias draws back with his hands raised: he will doubt, and be struck silent until his son is born.
