Spanish is the main language of the mission and daily life. Cochabamba is also home to strong Quechua cultural traditions.

A short history of the area

The Cochabamba Valley has been inhabited for thousands of years by groups including the Tiwanaku, Tupuraya, Mojocoya, Omereque, and Inca. Garci Ruiz de Orellana became the first Spanish inhabitant of the valley in 1542. The city was founded as Villa de Oropesa in January 1571 by order of Viceroy Francisco de Toledo.

Cochabamba is known as the City of Eternal Spring and the Garden City. The city sits at about 2,600 meters above sea level and is known for foods such as chicharrón, sillp’ancho, and pique macho. In 1812, women took up arms against the Spanish Army, and Bolivia now celebrates May 27 as Mother’s Day in their honor.

December 1964Branches were organized in La Paz and Cochabamba.
December 1964The first Bolivian convert was baptized in Cochabamba.
1966Congregations met in Cochabamba, La Paz, Oruro, and Santa Cruz.
1966The Andes South Mission was organized with headquarters in La Paz.
1967Desiderio Arce Cano became the first Bolivian to serve a mission for the Church.
1977A second mission was organized in Santa Cruz.
1982The second mission was relocated to Cochabamba.
2000The Cochabamba Bolivia Temple was dedicated on April 30.
