A short history of the area
In 1880, the area separated from São Paulo and was named Nossa Senhora da Conceição dos Guarulhos. On November 6, 1906, law #1.021 established the current name, Guarulhos. The city is now the second most populous in São Paulo state and the most populous Brazilian city that is not a state capital.
The Church here
- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German Church members living in the country.
- 1930sAnti-German sentiment led to a government ban on German in public. Church services soon changed to Portuguese, and some German-language materials were destroyed.
- 1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 12 years after 1966The first temple in South America was dedicated in São Paulo.
- 1978 onwardWards and stakes became established throughout Brazil, and hundreds of thousands of people were baptized in the country.
