About the mission

The Brazil Maceio Mission is centered in Maceió, the capital of Alagoas on Brazil’s northeastern coast. Maceió lies between the Mundaú Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean.

Portuguese is the mission language and the main language used throughout Brazil.

A short history of the area

Maceió began around an old sugar mill and plantation complex. Its growth was closely tied to ships taking wood from Jaraguá Bay and to the development of the Port of Jaraguá. The settlement became a village on December 5, 1815.

Maceió became the capital of Alagoas on December 9, 1839. Sugar, tobacco, coconut, leather, and spices were among the products exported through the city. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Pleasures was built in 1840.

1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil after German members requested missionary help.
1935The Brazil Mission was established, with Rulon S. Howells as mission president.
1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
1966A Church branch was established in Maceió.
1978The São Paulo Brazil Temple, the first temple in South America, was dedicated.
2017The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced on April 2.
Since 1978Hundreds of thousands of people have been baptized in Brazil.

Many beaches near Maceió have natural pools and reefs a few meters offshore, reached by boat or raft.
