A short history of the area
São Bernardo do Campo became part of the Santo André district in 1938 and separated from Santo André again in 1945. During the 1950s and 1960s, the city became an important center for metalworking and automobile manufacturing. It is now known as Brazil’s Automobile Capital.

- 1930sAnti-German sentiment led to a government ban on using German in public, and Church services soon changed to Portuguese.
