A short history of the area
Anaheim was incorporated on March 18, 1876. Grapevine disease destroyed the local wine industry in 1884 and 1885, and walnuts, lemons, and oranges became important crops. Disneyland opened to the public on July 17, 1955, on land that had once held orange and walnut trees.

- 1846Latter-day Saint immigrants first arrived in San Francisco, and the Mormon Battalion arrived in San Diego in January.
- 1848Six Mormon Battalion members were at Sutter’s Mill when gold was discovered in January.
- 1850The Latter-day Saint colony of New Hope was founded, and the first Church building in California was completed.
- 1851Church leaders encouraged colonization in San Bernardino to help create a travel route from the coast for Utah-bound Saints.
- 1966The California South Mission was organized on July 10 after the California Mission was divided.
- 1974The California South Mission was renamed the California Anaheim Mission on June 20.
