A short history of the area

The Nisenan lived in the land that became Roseville for more than 2,000 years before disease, miners, and settlers forced many from the area. The settlement grew around a stagecoach station called Griders. In 1864, Central Pacific Railroad tracks met the California Central Railroad line, and the location became known as Junction.

Roseville was incorporated on April 10, 1909, three years after Southern Pacific moved its facilities from Rocklin to Roseville. The railroad helped the city grow, and Roseville later expanded as Interstate 80 brought new businesses and residents.

  3. January 1848Six Mormon Battalion members were at Sutter’s Mill when gold was discovered.
  4. 1850The Latter-day Saint colony of New Hope was founded in California.
  5. 1850The first Church building in California was completed.
  6. 1851Church leaders encouraged colonization in San Bernardino to support a travel route from the coast to Utah.
  7. 1993The California Sacramento Mission was divided to create the California Roseville Mission. The new mission had 37,862 members in 11 stakes and a population of 1.2 million.
