A short history of the area
Chile captured Antofagasta on 14 February 1879, an event that helped trigger the War of the Pacific. A clock tower in Plaza Colón was built in 1912 by the British community and modeled after Big Ben.

- 1851–1852Elder Parley P. Pratt of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles served a mission in Chile.
- 1952Billie F. Fotheringham and his family moved to Chile, secured permission for missionaries to enter the country, and petitioned the Church to establish a mission.
- 1956Missionaries arrived in Chile, and the Santiago Branch was organized.
- 1959Chile and Peru became part of the new Andes Mission, headquartered in Lima.
- 1961The Chilean Mission was organized with 12 branches and 1,136 members.
- 1972The first stake in Chile was organized in Santiago in November.
- 1983The first temple in Spanish-speaking South America was dedicated in Santiago.
- 1988The Chile Antofagasta Mission was organized.
