A short history of the area
Tucumán played a central role in Argentine independence. On July 9, 1816, the Congress of Tucumán declared independence from Spain. The province is also known as El Jardín de la República, or “The Garden of the Republic.”
The Church here
- 1923Wilhelm Friedrichs and Emil Hoppe, two German immigrants, began preaching the gospel in Buenos Aires.
- 1925Apostle Melvin J. Ballard dedicated South America for the preaching of the gospel and established the South American Mission in December.
- 1940sForeign missionaries were withdrawn from Argentina, and local members led the branches and mission organization.
- 1946Foreign missionaries returned to Argentina.
- 1950sA building program provided meetinghouses and training opportunities for young men serving building missions.
- 1960Missionaries were sent to Tucumán, along with Jujuy and Resistencia, as missionary work expanded in northern Argentina.
- 1966A stake was created in Buenos Aires.
