A short history of the area
The Matadi-Kinshasa portage railway was completed in 1898, helping the city grow. Léopoldville became the capital of the Belgian Congo in 1923. In 1966, it was renamed Kinshasa, recalling the area's earlier name. Today, Kinshasa is one of Africa's largest cities and a major cultural center.
The Church here
- 1960sCongolese converts who had been baptized outside the country returned home and petitioned Church headquarters to send missionaries.
- 1979Church President Spencer W. Kimball sent Oscar McConkie to explore the possibility of organizing the Church in Zaïre, later renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- 1986The Church obtained legal status, and the first missionaries, Ralph and Jean Hutchings, arrived in February.
- 1987The Zaire Kinshasa Mission was organized on July 1, with R. Bay Hutchings as president.
- 1988The Kinshasa District was organized on September 18.
- 1994The mission was reopened after a period when missionary work had been interrupted.
- 1995The mission and temporal office returned to Kinshasa in May.
- 1996The Kinshasa Zaire Stake was organized on November 3.
- 1997The mission name was changed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo Kinshasa Mission on August 12.
