About the mission

The Democratic Republic of the Congo Lubumbashi Mission is based in Lubumbashi, the country’s mining capital and second-largest city. The mission was established in 2010 as Church activity expanded beyond Kinshasa.

French and Lingala are used in the mission. French is widely used in public life, while Lingala is one of the country’s important regional languages.

A short history of the area

Lubumbashi was established by the Belgian government in 1910 as Élisabethville. The site was selected because it was near the Etoile du Congo copper mine and a copper-ore smelting oven on the nearby Lubumbashi River. The city was named for Queen Elisabeth, consort of King Albert I of the Belgians.

Mining and railways helped the city grow during the 1920s. Lubumbashi later served as the center of the secessionist state of Katanga from 1960 to 1963. Mobutu Sese Seko renamed the city Lubumbashi in 1966.

The Church here

1960sCongolese converts who had been baptized outside the country returned home and petitioned Church headquarters to send missionaries.
1979Church President Spencer W. Kimball sent Oscar McConkie to explore the possibility of organizing the Church in Zaïre, later renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
February 1986The first missionaries, Ralph and Jean Hutchings, arrived in the country while several groups were meeting each week.
February 1987Roger and Simone Dock became the first missionaries assigned to Lubumbashi.
June 1987The Zaïre Kinshasa Mission was officially organized.
July 25, 1987The Lubumbashi Branch was organized, with Clement Mubalamate Kavuala as president.
September 7, 1997The Lubumbashi Democratic Republic of the Congo Stake was organized, with Nzembelenge Milambo as president.
June 30, 2010The Democratic Republic of the Congo Lubumbashi Mission was established as the second mission in the country.
