A short history of the area
A hurricane destroyed the original settlement in 1502, and the city was rebuilt on the other side of the Ozama River. Santo Domingo became the capital of the independent Dominican Republic in 1844. Its Colonial Zone became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
The Church here
- 1978Dominican members who had joined the Church while living in the United States returned to Santo Domingo. Missionaries arrived, and the first branch was organized on September 12.
- 1980The Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Mission was organized.
- 1986The first stake in the Dominican Republic was organized in Santo Domingo.
- 1992Dominican members received satellite broadcasts of General Conference.
- 1998Church members and missionaries gave many hours to relief efforts after Hurricane George in September.
- 2000The Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Temple was dedicated on September 17, the first Church temple in the Caribbean.
