A short history of the area
Honolulu later became known around the world because of the Japanese attack on nearby Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Today it is a major Pacific port and the home of the United States Pacific Fleet.
The Church here
- 1850-1851The first Latter-day Saint missionaries arrived in Honolulu on December 12, 1850, and the first Hawaiian convert was baptized on February 10, 1851.
- Early 1850sGeorge Q. Cannon and Hawaiian convert Jonathan Nāpela translated the Book of Mormon into Hawaiian, the first translation into a non-European language.
- 1854The Church obtained land on Lānaʻi as a place of gathering for Hawaiian Saints.
- By the 1870sMore than 4,000 Hawaiians were Latter-day Saints.
- 1919The Lā’ie temple was dedicated as the first Latter-day Saint temple outside North America.
- 1935The Oʻahu Stake was organized as the first stake in Hawaii and the first outside North America.
- 1937The Japanese Mission was organized in Hawaii to serve the many Japanese people living there.
- 1950sThe Church established a college in Lā’ie, now Brigham Young University–Hawaii, to bring together students from around the world.
- 2000A second temple in Hawaii, the Kona temple, was dedicated.
