About the mission

The Kenya Nairobi West Mission is based in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Nairobi is a busy city with deep roots in railway history, trade, wildlife, and Christian missionary work.

Swahili and English are the main languages for missionaries and members serving in the area. Learning a few Swahili phrases can help missionaries connect with local families and communities.

A short history of the area

Nairobi began as a railway depot in British East Africa. The Uganda Railway reached the area on May 30, 1899, and the town became an important center for administration and trade. Nairobi replaced Mombasa as the capital of the East Africa Protectorate in 1907.

Nairobi became the capital of independent Kenya in 1963. Today, the city stands at about 1,795 meters above sea level and is known for its mild highland climate, green spaces, and national park within the city boundaries.

The Church here

  1. 1970sAmerican USAID employees and their families held Church services in their homes in Kenya.
  2. 1979The first African converts in Kenya were baptized.
  3. 1980The first two missionaries, Elder Farrell and Sister Blanch McGhie, arrived in Kenya.
  4. 1981Branches were created in Nairobi and Kiboko.
  5. 1991The Church received official recognition in Kenya, and missionary headquarters were established in Nairobi.
  6. 1994The first Church meetinghouse in Kenya was completed for the Longata Branch in Nairobi.
  7. 1998President Gordon B. Hinckley became the first Church president to visit Eastern Africa and spoke to 900 members gathered in Nairobi.
  8. 2001The Nairobi Kenya Stake was organized as the first stake in Kenya.
  9. 2016The Nairobi Kenya Stake was divided to form the Nairobi East Stake and the Nairobi West Stake.
