A short history of the area
Busan's port and a Japanese concession community were established in 1423. The city became Korea's first international port in 1876. During the Korean War, Busan was one of only two South Korean cities not captured by the North Korean army during the first three months of the war, and it served for a time as South Korea's de facto capital.
The Church here
- 1940sLatter-day Saints serving in the United States military began holding meetings in South Korea.
- 1951Kim Ho Jik returned to Korea after being baptized in the United States and began working with servicemen to share the gospel.
- 1952Han Yung Hee, Lee Sung Ja, Kim Tai Whan, and Kim Young Sook were baptized at Songdo Beach in Busan.
- 1953A Korean-speaking Sunday School was organized. A major fire in downtown Busan also destroyed the Base Chapel meetinghouse.
- 1962The Korean Mission opened on July 8, with Gail E. Carr as its first president.
- 1967The Book of Mormon was published in Korean.
- 1973The Seoul Korea Stake was organized as the first stake in mainland Asia.
- 1975The Korea Busan Mission was organized on July 1 from a division of the Korea Seoul Mission.
- 1985The Seoul Korea Temple was dedicated in December.
- 2022A Busan Korea Temple was announced on October 2 as South Korea's second temple.
