A short history of the area
The name Aguascalientes means “hot waters,” referring to the hot springs found in the area. The state separated from Zacatecas in the nineteenth century and became one of Mexico’s states. Today, Aguascalientes is known for its warm climate, vineyards, guavas, and San Marcos Fair.

- 1870sMexico’s growing religious liberty led Brigham Young to conclude that the restored gospel should be taken to Mexico.
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1936–1946Tensions with returning mission leadership led to a painful schism in the Church in Mexico before members were reconciled.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, and became the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
