A short history of the area
The city was renamed Ulaanbaatar, meaning “Red Hero,” in 1924. Today, it is known as the coldest national capital in the world. About two-thirds of its residents live in ger districts.
The Church here
- 1992Six missionary couples arrived in Mongolia to assist with higher education and teach about the Church. The first couples lived in Ulaanbaatar.
- 1993The first Mongolian converts were baptized, and the Ulaanbaatar Branch was organized in September.
- 1994The Church was officially registered with the Mongolian government on October 24.
- 1995The Mongolia Ulaanbaatar Mission was officially organized on July 1, with Elder Richard E. Cook as its first mission president.
- 1996Seminary and institute classes began in Mongolia.
- 1999The first meetinghouse was dedicated on June 6 in a historic Ulaanbaatar building known as the “Children’s Cinema.”
- 2009Mongolia’s first stake, the Ulaanbaatar Mongolia West Stake, was organized on June 7.
- 2016The Ulaanbaatar Mongolia East Stake, Mongolia’s second stake, was organized on May 29.
- 2023The Church in Mongolia marked the 30th year of the Mongolian Mission.
