A short history of the area

Pioneers settled in the Truckee Meadows by the mid-1850s. Charles W. Fuller built a toll bridge across the Truckee River in 1859, and Myron C. Lake later developed the nearby community known as Lake's Crossing.

Reno officially began on May 9, 1868, when the Central Pacific Railroad established a station there. The city was named for Major General Jesse Lee Reno. Today, Reno is known as the Biggest Little City in the World and is about 23 miles from Lake Tahoe.

1851Latter-day Saints established Mormon Station in western Nevada. Elder Orson Hyde named the community Genoa.
1864A group of Latter-day Saints established a settlement in Panaca.
1883A branch was organized at Overton.
1912Overton became the headquarters of Nevada's first permanent stake, the Moapa Stake.
1954The Las Vegas Stake was created.
1975The Nevada Las Vegas Mission was organized from the Arizona Tempe and California Sacramento missions.
2000The Reno Nevada Temple was dedicated.
2012The Nevada Reno Mission was created after the Las Vegas and Las Vegas West Missions were realigned.
