A short history of the area

Franklinton, the first European settlement in the area, was founded in 1797 by Lucas Sullivant. Columbus was founded on February 14, 1812, at the meeting of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. It was named for Christopher Columbus and became Ohio's capital in 1816.

The National Road reached Columbus in 1831, followed by railroads in 1850 and 1851. The city annexed Franklinton in 1837. Columbus is also known as the Discovery City, Arch City, and Cap City.

The Church here

  1. 1831Missionaries visited people of the Delaware Nation, and Ohio minister Sidney Rigdon and much of his congregation in Mentor joined the Church.
  2. 1831–1838Kirtland served as Church headquarters.
  3. 1836The Kirtland Temple was completed after three years of labor.
  4. 1962The first stake in Columbus was organized.
  5. 1967The Ohio Mission was created.
  6. 1974The Ohio Mission was renamed the Columbus Ohio Mission.
  7. 1999Latter-day Saints hosted an open house for the Columbus Ohio Temple before its dedication.
  8. 2010Church archivists worked with the Geauga County Archives Department to digitally preserve historical documents.
