A short history of the area
The settlement was named Eugene City in 1853, incorporated on October 17, 1862, and renamed Eugene in 1889. Today, Eugene is known as the Emerald City and Track Town USA. It hosted the 2022 World Athletics Championship.
The Church here
- 1887Latter-day Saint settlement in Oregon grew after businessmen built a lumber mill on North Powder River and encouraged several hundred Latter-day Saint families to move to Oregon.
- 1901A stake was created in Oregon after enough members had migrated to the state.
- 1903Oregon’s five original congregations had grown to twelve.
- 1930Church membership in Oregon reached 3,230.
- 1989The Portland Oregon Temple was dedicated, and more than 300,000 visitors toured the building.
- 1990A second mission was created in Oregon with headquarters in Eugene on July 1.
