A short history of the area

Indigenous Multnomah and Clackamas people lived in the Portland area for many centuries. European American settlers began arriving in the 1840s by way of the Oregon Trail. William Overton and Asa Lovejoy established a 640-acre site in 1843, and Francis W. Pettygrove later acquired half of it.

The settlement was named Portland after a coin toss in 1845. Portland was incorporated on February 8, 1851, with more than 800 residents. Today, it is known as the Rose City and has a warm, rainy winter climate and warm, dry summers.

  1. 1855Latter-day Saint missionaries were sent into Oregon from California.
  2. 1897The Northwestern States Mission was organized, with its headquarters in Portland.
  3. 1898Missionaries George and Sam Parkinson came to Portland to determine whether missionaries should be sent to the city.
  4. 1899The Portland Branch was created on December 19 and met in a rented room.
  5. 1901A stake was created in Oregon after enough members had migrated there.
  6. 1903The five original Oregon congregations had grown to twelve.
  7. 1930Church membership in Oregon reached 3,230.
  8. 1989The Portland Oregon Temple was dedicated, and more than 300,000 visitors toured the building.
