A short history of the area
From October 23, 1944, until February 27, 1945, Tacloban served as the temporary capital and seat of the Commonwealth Government of the Philippines. It became a chartered city on June 20, 1952. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan caused massive destruction in the city.
The Church here
- 1898Willard Call and George Seaman, American servicemen from Utah, made an early attempt to introduce the Church in the Philippines.
- 1940s–1950sA few Filipinos joined the Church.
- 1961Missionary work began in earnest, and the Church received official recognition in the Philippines.
- 1967The Philippines Mission was organized, and Church work spread to eight major islands.
- 1973The first stake in the Philippines was organized.
- 1984The country's first temple was dedicated.
- 1990The Philippines Tacloban Mission was created to serve Samar and Leyte provinces.
