The Three Witnesses: Men Who Stood for the Restoration

In the spring of 1829, something extraordinary happened in the woods near Fayette, New York. Three men—Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris—were shown the gold plates from which the Book of Mormon had been translated. They saw an angel, heard the voice of God, and were commanded to bear witness of what they had seen. Their testimony became one of the most enduring declarations in the history of the Restoration.

Their importance, however, extends far beyond the fact that they saw the plates. Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris were not merely witnesses of the Book of Mormon—they were contributors to the work of the Restoration. Each sacrificed time, resources, reputation, and personal comfort to help bring the gospel of Jesus Christ back to the earth.

Oliver Cowdery became Joseph Smith’s principal scribe during much of the translation of the Book of Mormon. His arrival was a remarkable answer to Joseph’s prayers for help. Together they translated the majority of the record, and Oliver became one of the earliest leaders of the restored Church. He was present when John the Baptist restored the Aaronic Priesthood and later participated in the restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood. Oliver also helped organize the Church, preached the restored gospel, and became one of its first missionaries. His contribution was foundational.

David Whitmer opened his home and his resources to Joseph and Oliver during the translation of the Book of Mormon. His family provided a place where the translation could continue when circumstances made the work difficult elsewhere. David became one of the Three Witnesses and later served as a leader in the newly organized Church. His testimony endured through decades of controversy and personal hardship. Even when his relationship with Church leadership became strained, David continued to affirm what he had experienced. His witness reminds us that testimony can endure even when life becomes complicated.

Martin Harris made enormous sacrifices to help bring the Book of Mormon into print. He mortgaged his farm to provide financial support for the publication and traveled with Joseph in pursuit of the resources necessary to complete the work. His story includes painful trials, including the loss of the 116 manuscript pages, yet he remained connected to the Restoration and never abandoned his testimony of the reality of the plates and the divine origin of the Book of Mormon.

These three men were imperfect. They made mistakes, experienced disagreements, and faced moments of doubt and difficulty. Yet that makes their testimonies even more significant. Their witness was not based on a life free from hardship. It was based on something they said they had personally experienced.

The Three Witnesses remind us that the Restoration was built through faith, sacrifice, courage, and testimony. Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris each played a meaningful role in bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.

Their names remain attached to the Book of Mormon for a reason: they saw, they knew, and they testified. And their invitation reaches us today—to seek Christ, study His word, and become witnesses of the Restoration ourselves.
