Strong in Body, Strong in Spirit: Brigham Young

The image of Brigham Young curling a massive dumbbell is intentionally larger than life. It is humorous, bold, and perhaps a little exaggerated—but behind the strongman imagery is a principle deeply rooted in Latter-day Saint teachings: God cares about both our spiritual strength and our physical strength. The gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us that the body is a sacred gift, and discipleship requires us to care for it while developing the strength of our spirits.

Brigham Young understood the importance of work, discipline, and self-reliance. The early Saints faced extraordinary physical challenges as they built homes, planted crops, crossed mountains, and established communities in difficult circumstances. Their faith was not merely something they discussed on Sundays. They had to put their faith into action through sacrifice, perseverance, hard work, and endurance.

That principle is captured in the phrase “Strong in Body • Strong in Spirit.” Physical strength alone is not the goal. A powerful body without a strong spirit accomplishes very little of eternal significance. Likewise, spiritual intentions are often strengthened when we learn discipline in the physical aspects of life. Exercise, meaningful work, adequate rest, healthy habits, and self-control can all become opportunities to practice principles that also strengthen us spiritually.

Doctrine and Covenants 88:124 provides an especially fitting foundation for this message. The Lord instructed the Saints to “cease to be idle” and to retire to bed early so that they might arise early, giving their bodies and minds the opportunity to be strengthened. The revelation connects daily habits, physical well-being, mental clarity, and spiritual preparation. The Lord was teaching His people that how we live our ordinary lives matters.

The words “Faith Builds” remind us that lasting strength begins with faith in Jesus Christ. Faith motivates us to act, repent, endure trials, and become better disciples. But faith also requires effort. Just as muscles become stronger through resistance and consistent training, spiritual strength develops as we repeatedly choose righteousness, keep covenants, pray, study the scriptures, serve others, and endure adversity with faith.

“Discipline Endures” completes the message. Motivation comes and goes, but discipline allows us to continue when motivation disappears. The Savior's disciples are not promised a life without difficulty. Instead, we are invited to become the kind of people who can withstand difficulty without losing our faith.

Brigham Young's strongman image therefore represents more than physical power. It symbolizes work, discipline, endurance, faith, and preparation. The dumbbell is a visual reminder that strength must be developed. Every repetition represents another choice to become stronger.

Ultimately, the greatest strength is not measured by how much weight we can lift. It is measured by our willingness to lift burdens, serve others, keep our covenants, overcome temptation, and follow Jesus Christ.

Be strong in body. Be strong in spirit. Build your faith. Develop your discipline. And prepare yourself for the work God has placed before you.
