Liahona WiFi T-Shirt — Product Description
Need a little divine direction? Connect to the Liahona.
The Liahona WiFi T-shirt is a playful Book of Mormon twist on one of scripture’s most fascinating objects: the mysterious brass ball that appeared outside Lehi’s tent and helped guide his family through the wilderness. Featuring a retro-inspired WiFi symbol, the bold word LIAHONA, and the password alma3738, this shirt is part scripture reference, part inside joke, and part conversation starter.
And there’s a great little Book of Mormon detail hiding in plain sight.
When Nephi first describes the object in 1 Nephi 16:10, he calls it a “round ball of curious workmanship” with two spindles. It pointed the family in the direction they should travel—and, remarkably, it could also display writing that gave them instructions. The instrument worked according to their faith, diligence, and heed.
But here's the fun part: Nephi never calls it the “Liahona.”
Neither does the book of 1 Nephi. Neither does 2 Nephi. In fact, the name doesn't appear until centuries later in the story, when Alma is teaching his son Helaman. In Alma 37:38, Alma finally explains that “our fathers called it Liahona,” adding that it was “being interpreted, a compass.”
So yes—the password on this shirt is alma3738 for a reason.
Alma's lesson is much bigger than navigation. He explains that the Liahona worked according to faith in God, and when Lehi's family became slothful and stopped exercising faith and diligence, the marvelous works ceased and they stopped progressing on their journey.
In other words, the original Liahona didn't have a WiFi problem. The users did.
That idea has become an important metaphor in Latter-day Saint teaching. Elder W. Rolfe Kerr taught that the words of Christ can be a “personal Liahona”, pointing us toward eternal life. Elder Russell M. Ballard similarly emphasized Alma's teaching that great things can come through “small and simple things.”
And the symbolism goes even deeper. Church teachings describe the Liahona as a type and shadow of the way God guides His children. The physical instrument pointed Lehi's family toward a promised land; spiritually, the words of Christ point us toward Jesus Christ and eternal life.
Even the name itself has attracted scholarly attention. Scripture Central notes that scholars have explored possible Hebrew and Egyptian elements within Liahona, including connections to the divine name Jehovah/Yahweh, while emphasizing that the precise etymology remains debated.
So wear this shirt when you're looking for direction, searching for a signal, or just trying to get the WiFi password at church.
Liahona. alma3738. Faith required.
