Teancum: The Book of Mormon’s Original Assassin

If the Book of Mormon had a special-operations unit, Teancum would be one of its first recruits.

A fearless Nephite military leader, Teancum repeatedly stood between the Nephites and their enemies. He defeated Morianton and his followers, repelled the armies of Amalickiah, and proved himself a highly skilled battlefield commander.

But Teancum’s most legendary mission came at night.

After a hard day of fighting, while the armies slept, Teancum and his servant quietly slipped into the Lamanite camp. He entered Amalickiah’s tent, drove a javelin into his heart, and returned to his own camp before the enemy realized what had happened. Talk about night ops.

Years later, Teancum faced Amalickiah’s brother, Ammoron, who had continued the war. Determined to end the devastating conflict, Teancum again went behind enemy lines. He lowered himself over the city wall with a rope, found the sleeping king, and struck him with a javelin. This time, however, Ammoron’s servants awoke, pursued Teancum, and killed him.

The Book of Mormon doesn't glorify warfare for its own sake. Its stories show the terrible costs of conflict—bloodshed, famine, suffering, and death—while also teaching courage, preparation, strategy, leadership, sacrifice, and the defense of liberty. After Teancum’s death, Moroni mourned him as a man who had “fought valiantly for his country” and was a true friend to liberty.

Teancum reminds us that even the Book of Mormon’s battle stories can teach powerful lessons: prepare well, stand for what matters, protect others, and have the courage to act when the moment comes.
