A short history of the area
Luanda was a major center of the slave trade to Brazil from about 1550 to 1836. After Angola became independent in 1975, war and internal migration caused the city to grow quickly. Major reconstruction began after the Angolan Civil War ended in 2002.
The Church here
- 1992Church leaders organized the first group in Angola in Luanda, with Carlos Ferreira from Mozambique as the group leader.
- 1992Maria da Silva filed official papers for the legal registration of the Church in Angola.
- 1993The Church was officially recognized in Angola.
- 1996The first branch was organized in Luanda. At the organizing conference, 86 people attended, including 25 Church members.
- 1996Six months after the first branch was organized, the Luanda Angola District was organized.
- 2008The first Latter-day Saint missionaries began serving in Angola.
- 2013The Angola Luanda Mission was formed.
- 2018The Luanda Angola Stake was organized on December 2, becoming the first stake in Angola.
