A short history of the area
Luanda became the capital of independent Angola in 1975. After the civil war ended in 2002, major reconstruction began, supported by growth from oil and diamond production. Today, it is one of the world’s largest Portuguese-speaking capitals.
The Church here
- 1980–1996Records indicate that about 400 members baptized in Europe returned to cities in Angola.
- 1993The Church was officially recognized in Angola.
- 1996The first branch, a small congregation, was organized in Luanda. Members had previously met in the homes of priesthood holders.
- 2013The Angola Luanda Mission was organized, with Danny L. Merrill as its first mission president. It separated from the Maputo Mozambique Mission.
- 2018The Luanda Angola Stake was organized on December 2, becoming the first stake in Angola.
