A short history of the area
The Bentonville Railroad Company connected the city with Rogers in 1883. In 1951, Sam Walton opened Walton’s 5 and 10 Variety Store in Bentonville. That store eventually led to the creation of Walmart. Today, the city is also known for Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, mountain-bike trails, and a large network of parks and trails.
The Church here
- 1835Wilford Woodruff and Henry Brown arrived in Arkansas and held the first Church meeting in the state. The first Arkansas converts were baptized in February.
- 1857Parley P. Pratt, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, was murdered near Van Buren, Arkansas.
- 1875Missionaries baptized nearly 90 people in the Des Arc area.
- 1877About 27 families, totaling 125 people, moved from the Des Arc area to Utah by wagon.
- 1969The Church organized its first stake in Arkansas in Little Rock.
- 1980s–1990sDavid A. Bednar served as a prominent Church member in Arkansas, teaching at the University of Arkansas and serving as a stake president.
- 2014A seventh Arkansas stake was organized in Bentonville on October 26.
- 2019Church authorities announced plans to construct a temple in Bentonville.
- 2023The Bentonville Arkansas Temple was dedicated on September 17.
