A short history of the area
The city grew after the Hannibal Bridge opened across the Missouri River in 1869. Westport became part of Kansas City in 1897, and the Country Club Plaza opened in 1925. Today, Kansas City is known as the City of Fountains and the Heart of America.
The Church here
- 1831Joseph Smith told Church members that Independence in Jackson County was to be the gathering place for the Church.
- 1834Zion’s Camp arrived in Missouri to protect Church members, but a storm prevented a confrontation. The camp was later disbanded.
- 1838Far West became Church headquarters. Violence in Missouri led to the extermination order, the killings at Haun’s Mill, and Joseph Smith’s arrest.
- 1839Between 12,000 and 15,000 Church members left Missouri for western Illinois, while others moved to St. Louis.
- 1900Mission headquarters moved from St. John, Kansas, to Kansas City, Missouri, and Missouri became part of the Southwestern States Mission.
- 1904The Southwestern States Mission was renamed the Central States Mission.
- 1970The mission was renamed the Kansas-Missouri Mission after further boundary changes.
- 1974The mission was renamed the Missouri Independence Mission.
- 1976Missouri Governor Christopher S. Bond rescinded the extermination order issued in 1838.
