A short history of the area
The city grew after the first transcontinental railroad groundbreaking in 1863. Omaha later became known for its stockyards, meat-packing industry, and annual College World Series, which has been held there since 1950.

- 1846Thousands of early Church members made camps along the Missouri River in what is now Nebraska.
- 1846Winter Quarters provided a winter resting place for pioneers driven from Nauvoo, Illinois, as they traveled west.
- 1846Later camps, including Wyoming, Nebraska, served as outfitting posts for Latter-day Saints continuing to the Salt Lake Valley.
- 1896The first congregation in Nebraska was organized.
- 1916A Sunday School was established in Lincoln.
- 1960The first stake in Nebraska was created in Lincoln.
- 1997The Church dedicated the Mormon Trail Center at Winter Quarters.
- 2001The Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple was dedicated in April beside the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery.
