A short history of the area
Rail service connecting Campinas with São Paulo and the port of Santos opened in 1867 and helped the city grow. Coffee later brought wealth, while immigration and industrialization shaped the city after the abolition of slavery. Campinas is now known as the Brazilian Silicon Valley because of its work in technology, telecommunications, medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology.
The Church here
- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German Church members.
- 1935The Brazilian Mission was organized in São Paulo, with Rulon S. Howells as mission president.
- 1940The Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was first published, and missionary work began shifting to Portuguese.
- 1943Local members were called to lead branches in São Paulo and Campinas.
- 1946Alfredo Lima Vaz of Campinas became the first native Brazilian to serve as a full-time missionary.
- 1963A Campinas District was created in the Brazilian Mission.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 1978Hundreds of thousands of people began being baptized in Brazil from this time onward.
- 1986The Campinas Brazil Castelo Stake was created on February 2.
