About the mission

The Brazil Cuiaba Mission was created in 2006 when the Manaus and Brasília missions were divided. About 4.5 million people lived in the new mission, which helped reduce travel demands for missionaries and local leaders.

Portuguese is the mission language and the main language used throughout Brazil.

A short history of the area

Portuguese bandeirantes reached the Cuiabá region in the 1600s. Pascoal Moreira Cabral arrived in 1718 and found gold after traveling down the Coxipó River. Cuiabá’s founding is dated to April 8, 1719, and the city was formally founded on January 1, 1727, as Vila Real do Senhor Bom Jesus de Cuiabá.

Cuiabá became the capital of Mato Grosso in 1835. Today, the city lies near the geographical center of South America and sits where the Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal ecosystems meet.

  1. 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil after requests from German members living in the country.
  2. 1930sChurch services began to be held in Portuguese after the government banned the public use of German.
  3. 1940The Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was first published.
  4. 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
  5. 2006The Brazil Cuiaba Mission was created when the Manaus and Brasília missions were divided.
  6. 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced as Brazil’s 10th temple on April 2.
