About the mission

The Brazil Feira de Santana Mission is based in Feira de Santana, a major city in Bahia, Brazil. The city lies about 100 kilometers northwest of Salvador and is an important crossroads for travel in northeastern Brazil.

Portuguese is the language used in the mission and throughout Brazil. Missionaries and families will hear Portuguese in homes, churches, shops, and public places.

A short history of the area

In the 18th century, Domingos Barbosa de Araujo and his wife, Anna Brandoa, established the St-Anne-of-the-Fountains Plantation at the edge of Bahia's backcountry. Cattle fairs held there led to the name Feira de Santa Anna, later shortened to Feira de Santana.

The plantation became a meeting place for cowboys traveling from inland pastures toward the port of Cachoeira. Feira de Santana later became the second city in Bahia after the capital and the 31st in colonial Brazil. Today, it is the state's second-most populous city and a major transportation crossroads.

  1. 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil after German Church members requested help.
  2. 1930sChurch services in Brazil shifted to Portuguese after the government banned German in public settings.
  3. 1935The Brazil Mission opened on February 9, with Rulon S. Howells as mission president.
  4. 1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
  5. 1966Brazil's first stake, and the first stake in South America, was organized in São Paulo.
  6. Since 1978Hundreds of thousands of people have been baptized in Brazil.
  7. 1996The Feira de Santana Brazil Stake was organized on September 15.
  8. April 2, 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced.
