A short history of the area
The name “Salvador” means “salvation” or “saviour” in Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese. TV Salvador was a defunct television station in Salvador, Bahia.
The Church here
- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German members living in the country.
- 1930sAnti-German sentiment led to a government ban on German in public. Church services soon changed to Portuguese, and some German-language materials were destroyed.
- 1940The Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was first published.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 1978The São Paulo Brazil Temple was dedicated, 12 years after the first stake in South America was created there.
- Since 1978Hundreds of thousands of people have been baptized in Brazil.
- 1990The Brazil Salvador Mission was created.
- 1992The first stake in Salvador was organized.
- 1994A second mission in Salvador was created.
- 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple, identified as Brazil’s 10th temple, was announced on April 2.
