The Brazil Florianopolis Mission is in southern Brazil. A 1993 report placed the mission headquarters near Joinville and described a population of 1.3 million in the mission area.

Portuguese is the mission language and the main language spoken throughout Brazil.

A short history of the area

Florianópolis was founded on March 23, 1623, and official settlement began in 1673 with the arrival of Francisco Dias Velho’s agricultural company. A chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Desterro was built in 1678.

The island was called Ilha dos Patos by Portuguese visitors around 1514 and Ilha de Santa Catarina by 1526. The city became the capital of Santa Catarina Province in 1823 and was renamed Florianópolis in 1893 in honor of Marshal Floriano Peixoto.

  1. 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German Church members living there.
  2. 1930sChurch services began to be held in Portuguese after the government banned German in public life.
  3. 1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
  4. 1966The first stake in South America was organized in São Paulo.
  5. 1985The Florianópolis Brazil Stake was organized on November 2.
  6. 1993The new Brazil Florianopolis Mission was reported with headquarters near Joinville, 4,839 members, two stakes, and two districts.
  7. 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced on April 2 as Brazil’s 10th temple.
