A short history of the area
European immigrants, including Poles, Italians, Germans, and Ukrainians, helped shape Curitiba during the 1850s. The city later became known for its 1968 Master Plan, which included transit pathways, controls on urban growth, historic-district preservation, and affordable public transportation.

- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil after responding to requests from German members living there.
- 1930sChurch services began to be held in Portuguese after the government restricted the public use of German.
- 1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
- 1958The Curitiba branch was divided in March.
- 1959The Curitiba district was organized about a year and a half after the branch was divided.
- 1963Chapels in Londrina and Curitiba were dedicated on January 12.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 1978Large numbers of people began being baptized in Brazil, and wards and stakes became established throughout the country.
- 1980The Curitiba Mission was organized.
