A short history of the area
The name Londrina means “from London” in Portuguese and honors the British capital. Today, Londrina is the second-largest city in Paraná and the fourth-largest city in Brazil’s southern region.
The Church here
- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German members living there.
- 1930sAnti-German sentiment led the government to ban German in public use. Church services soon changed to Portuguese, and some German-language materials were destroyed.
- 1935A mission was created and headquartered in São Paulo on May 25.
- 1940The Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was first published.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 1978The São Paulo Brazil Temple was dedicated, becoming the first temple in South America.
- Since 1978Hundreds of thousands of people have been baptized in Brazil, while wards and stakes became established throughout the country.
- 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple, identified as Brazil’s 10th temple, was announced on April 2.
