A short history of the area
Fortaleza became a village in 1726 and the capital of Ceará in 1799. Today it is a major Brazilian city with about 25 kilometres of urban beaches. It is also known as Fortal, Miami Brasileira, and Terra da Luz.

- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil after requests from German members living in the country.
- 1930sChurch services in Brazil began to be held in Portuguese after the government banned the public use of German.
- 1938The first Latter-day Saint branch in Ceará was organized in Fortaleza.
- 1940The Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was first published.
- 1962Missionaries were assigned to Fortaleza.
- 1964Missionaries were withdrawn from Fortaleza because of a lack of baptisms.
- 1965Elders John Beck and Robert Dionne arrived in Fortaleza on December 23.
- 1981The first Latter-day Saint stake in Fortaleza was organized.
- 1987The Brazil Fortaleza Mission was organized.
