A short history of the area

The area was originally inhabited by the Luiseño peoples, also called the Payomkawichum. Spanish exploration reached the region in 1769, when Father Juan Crespi visited the San Luis Rey Valley.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was founded in 1798 and became known as the “King of the Missions.” A town developed around the mission, and Oceanside was incorporated on July 3, 1888.

1846Latter-day Saint immigrants first arrived in San Francisco.
January 1847The Mormon Battalion arrived in San Diego.
January 1848Six Mormon Battalion members were at Sutter’s Mill when gold was discovered.
1850The Latter-day Saint colony of New Hope was founded in California, and the first Church building was completed.
1851Church leaders encouraged colonization in San Bernardino to strengthen a travel route from the coast for Utah-bound Saints.
2026The California Oceanside Mission was listed among missions to be organized in Southern California.
