About the mission

The California Carlsbad Mission is based in Carlsbad, in coastal Southern California. In 1993, it was created from the California San Diego Mission and included 11 stakes and 32,798 members.

Missionaries teach primarily in English and Spanish. Carlsbad is known for its beaches, lagoons, mild climate, and long history near Mission San Luis Rey.

A short history of the area

The Portolá expedition reached the Carlsbad area in 1769 and encountered Native villagers near Buena Vista Creek. The Luiseño and Diegueño, or Kumeyaay, peoples lived in the area. In 1798, the founding of Mission San Luis Rey brought the region more fully under Spanish mission control.

In the 1880s, John A. Frazier dug a well and sold its water near the train station. Water from a second well was compared with water from European spas, and the settlement was named after Karlsbad in Bohemia. Carlsbad incorporated on July 16, 1952, and had 114,746 residents in the 2020 census.

  1. 1846The Mormon Battalion arrived in San Diego in January.
  2. 1848Six Mormon Battalion members were at Sutter’s Mill when gold was discovered in January.
  3. 1850The Latter-day Saint colony of New Hope was founded in California, and the first Church building was completed.
  4. 1851Church leaders encouraged colonization in San Bernardino to strengthen a route from the coast for Saints traveling to Utah.
  5. 1993The California Carlsbad Mission was created from a division of the California San Diego Mission. It included 11 stakes and 32,798 members.
