A short history of the area
Tijuana became an international-border city after the Mexican-American War moved the boundary between the Californias. During the 1920s, visitors from the United States came for legal drinking and gambling. Today, Tijuana is known for its border crossing, street food, tacos, Baja Med cuisine, and the Caesar salad, which originated there in the 1920s.
The Church here
- 1875Brigham Young sent Daniel Jones with six missionaries to Mexico City to distribute Spanish-language materials about the Church.
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1940sThe first missionaries arrived in the Tijuana area from San Diego, California, and local families formed a worship group.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, to receive temple ordinances in Spanish, the first time in Church history that temple ordinances were received in a language other than English.
- 1983A temple was dedicated in Mexico City.
- 1990The Mexico Tijuana Mission was created from the Hermosillo Mission, including Tijuana, Mexicali, San Luis Rio Colorado, and a district in Guerrero Negro.
- 2010The Tijuana Mexico Temple was announced by Church President Thomas S. Monson.
