A short history of the area
A sawmill and the settlement of Gastown helped Vancouver grow in the 1800s. The city was incorporated on April 6, 1886, and was named for Royal Navy Captain George Vancouver. The Great Vancouver Fire destroyed the city that June, but Vancouver was quickly rebuilt.
The Church here
- September 1830Joseph Smith Sr. and his son Don Carlos preached in Canadian towns and hamlets north of the St. Lawrence River.
- 1832The first organized preaching of the restored gospel outside the United States took place in the Kingston area of Upper Canada, now Ontario.
- 1883Simeon F. Allen and Heber S. Allen became the first known Latter-day Saints to enter what is now Alberta.
- 1886Cache Stake President Charles O. Card received permission to investigate colonizing opportunities in southwestern Canada.
- 1902British Columbia became part of the Northwestern States Mission, and missionaries were assigned to Vancouver Island.
- 1911The Vancouver Branch was organized with Edward Neill as president.
- 1925The Vancouver Branch purchased the first Latter-day Saint Church building in British Columbia.
- 1960The first stake in British Columbia was organized when the Vancouver District became the Vancouver Stake.
- 1974The Canada Vancouver Mission was organized on June 20.
