The Washington Seattle Mission is centered in Seattle, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Seattle is a major city on Puget Sound and a technology, business, and cultural center.

Missionaries speak English and Spanish while serving the people of the area.

A short history of the area

Native Americans, including the Duwamish, lived in the Seattle area for at least 4,000 years before permanent European settlement. Arthur A. Denny and the Denny Party arrived at Alki Point on November 13, 1851, then moved across Elliott Bay in 1852 to establish the settlement of Duwamps.

The settlement was named Seattle in honor of Chief Seattle, a leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. Seattle became a town in 1865 and a city in 1869. The Great Seattle Fire destroyed the central business district in 1889, but the city was quickly rebuilt.

  1. 1854Four missionaries serving in California were sent to labor in the Washington and Oregon territories.
  2. 1854Enough converts joined to form a congregation along the Lewis River.
  3. 1899The first branch in Washington was created at Tacoma.
  4. 1902A branch was organized in Seattle on December 14.
  5. 1938The Seattle Stake, the first stake in Washington, was created on July 31.
  6. 1980The Seattle Washington Temple was completed.
  7. 1999The Spokane Washington Temple was completed and dedicated.
  8. 2001The Columbia River Washington Temple was completed and dedicated.
