A short history of the area
Medellín became the capital of Antioquia in 1826. The city later became an important center for industry and commerce. In 2013, the Urban Land Institute selected Medellín as the most innovative city in the world.
The Church here
- 1964A. Theodore Tuttle visited Bogotá and Medellín to study the possibility of establishing missionaries in Colombia.
- 1966On May 11, Elder Spencer W. Kimball dedicated Colombia for the preaching of the gospel and organized the first branch in the country.
- 1966–67Branches were organized in Bucaramanga, Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, and Pereira.
- 1971A mission was organized in Colombia.
- 1977The first stake in Colombia was created in Bogotá, when nearly 12,000 members lived in the country.
- 1984Colombian Latter-day Saints celebrated the announcement of a temple in the country.
- 1999The first temple in Colombia was dedicated, 15 years after its announcement.
- 2016Colombian Saints marked the Church’s 50th anniversary in the country with service projects, blood drives, family history exhibitions, and interfaith dialogues.
- 2018A second temple in Barranquilla was dedicated.
