A short history of the area
Denver City was platted in 1858 and incorporated in 1861. Colorado became a territory in 1861, Denver became the permanent state capital in 1881, and the consolidated City and County of Denver was established in 1902. Today, Denver is known as the Mile High City because its official elevation is 5,280 feet above sea level.
