A short history of the area
Atlanta was captured by the Union Army in 1864 after the Battle of Atlanta and a four-month siege. The city became Georgia's capital in 1868. It later became an important center of the civil rights movement, hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics, and developed into one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States.

- 1843Missionaries arrived in Georgia to preach and to campaign for Joseph Smith's United States presidential bid.
- 1844Joseph Smith was martyred, and missionary efforts in Georgia slowed.
- Late 1870sChurch activity resumed in Georgia, and the Southern States Mission was headquartered in Rome.
- July 1879One missionary was murdered, and missionaries left the state for a decade.
- 1957The first stake in Georgia, the Atlanta Stake, was organized with William L. Nichols as president.
- 1971The Southern States Mission was renamed the Georgia-South Carolina Mission, later becoming the Georgia Atlanta Mission.
- July 2003The Georgia Atlanta North Mission was created during a reorganization of missions in Georgia.
- 1983The Atlanta Georgia Temple was completed, the first temple built in the Southern states.
