A short history of the area
From 1881 to 1920, mining, steel production, and railroads helped Birmingham grow quickly. The city later became an important place in the civil rights movement, especially during the 1963 and 1964 protests.

- 1839Lysander Davis, described as the first missionary to labor in Alabama, preached at the courthouse in Montgomery on October 7.
- 1842Concerted missionary work began in Alabama through the efforts of James Brown and John U. Eldridge.
- 1843About 120 Church members in Alabama were organized into three congregations.
- 1930About 2,500 Church members lived in Alabama.
- 1968The first stake in Alabama was organized in Huntsville.
- 1979The Alabama Birmingham Mission was created on January 1.
