A short history of the area
Atlanta became an important railroad and military-supply center during the Civil War. Union forces captured the city in 1864, and Georgia moved its state capital from Milledgeville to Atlanta in 1868. Atlanta later hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics and grew into the center of a large metropolitan area.
The Church here
- 1843Missionaries arrived in Georgia to preach and to campaign for Church President Joseph Smith’s United States presidential bid.
- 1876John Morgan arrived in Georgia, converted many people in Haywood Valley, and organized a branch there.
- 1879A missionary was murdered in July, and missionaries left Georgia for about a decade.
- 1919The headquarters of the Southern States Mission moved to Atlanta under mission president Charles A. Callis.
- 1957The first stake in Georgia, the Atlanta Stake, was organized on May 5.
- 1974The Southern States Mission was renamed the Georgia Atlanta Mission on June 20.
- 1983The Atlanta Georgia Temple was completed, becoming the first temple built in the Southern states.
- 1994About 6,000 Church volunteers helped homeowners after flooding in the Atlanta area.
