A short history of the area
During the Civil War, Nashville became the first Confederate state capital captured by U.S. troops in 1862. The city later became known as Music City after the Grand Ole Opry began in 1925. Nashville's downtown lunch counters were desegregated in 1960 after student sit-ins and civil-rights demonstrations.
The Church here
- 1834Missionaries arrived in Tennessee in October, preached at a Campbellite church meeting, and baptized seven converts. Twenty-four more people were baptized later that year.
- 1835Wilford Woodruff joined the missionaries, preached to large audiences, and helped baptize 20 converts during the ensuing months.
- 1844Joseph Smith invited Tennessee state assemblyman Solomon Copeland to run as his vice-presidential candidate.
- 1884On August 10, more than a dozen mobbers attacked a Latter-day Saint worship service near Cane Creek and killed two missionaries and two local Church members.
- 1909The oldest existing Church building in the southeastern United States was dedicated in Northcutts Cove.
- 1965The first stake in Tennessee was established in Memphis.
- 1975The Tennessee Nashville Mission was created.
